Our Call To Be Mirrors For Each Other
Did you know that we all have blind spots? There are aspects of ourselves that we cannot see. The Bible tells us that sin contains deceitfulness within its very DNA. “But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13). Our sin deceives us by blinding us to its very presence.
What is invisible to us, however, is often easily visible to others. This is one of the many reasons that we as Christians, need one another, why we need church. We need a community of people who will love us enough to risk their relationship with us by telling us the truth about ourselves that we simply cannot see. “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness” (Galatians 6:1).
Christianity, at its very core, is a team sport, not an individual sport. We are called to life together, life with one another. Shared life, where we do for each other what none of us can do for ourselves: See us objectively. We are called to be honest mirrors, which truly reflect back to others, who they really are. Then in love, with a spirit of gentleness, we call our fellow believers to see their unseen sin, turning from it to Christ, for real freedom. “Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ” (Ephesians 4:15).
