Is 36:18 Beware lest Hezekiah mislead you by saying, “The LORD will deliver us.” Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

A general of the Assyrian army threatens Jerusalem with his powerful troops! The powerful of this world--whether small despots like school board members, or rulers like Hitler--always vaunt their own puny power over the God of the universe. They delight to flex their miniscule might over those who dare trust the Lord in defiance of their petty tyranny.

The general here seems to have grounds. To date, at that moment, no nation had stood against  Assyria. It seemed that none could, so talk of their gods delivering them, including Yahweh delivering Jerusalem, sounded like pious dribble.

Our enemies will always want to convince us of the futility of trusting God rather than yielding to their power! And how we tremble before them. We fear to raise the ire of the politically correct on the left, the social justice warriors. "Fear us", they scream, "not the God of the Bible. He will not,  he cannot help you. But we can destroy you. Obey us, fear us, pay us our due, or we will destroy you. Fear us and we will let you live. Defy us, trusting that ancient myth, and we will destroy you."

Too often, we have acquiesced. We have bowed the knee to the illiberal left, hoping to win their forbearance so they might grant us our lives. What an evil cowardly thing this is. For the Lord did deliver Jerusalem and defeated the seemingly undefeatable Assyria!

Lord, give us the boldness and courage of faith to speak your truth plainly. To be unafraid of the forces arrayed against us and to live for you, by your Word. Lord, let us stand bravely for you against all opposition in this world.
