What is Biblical Counseling?
By Lisa Matthews (Women’s Counselor)
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in Righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” --- 2 Timothy3:16-17
“The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul.” --- Psalm 19:7

At some point in life, everyone needs answers to difficult questions. “Why am I so anxious? Why is my marriage falling apart? Why do I continue to struggle with sin? Why do I feel hopeless?” The problems that we face are deeply personal and affect our homes, relationships, churches, and daily lives. The good news is that God has not left us without answers. As the Bible says, he has given us “all things that pertain to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3). This truth is at the heart of biblical counseling.

Biblical counseling is the church-based, one-another ministry of God’s Word by God’s people, relying on the power of the Holy Spirit to help others know Jesus, overcome sin, endure suffering, and grow in sanctification and Christlikeness. Biblical counseling does not simply seek symptom relief or self-improvement. It is focused soul care and discipleship with the conviction that God has spoken clearly in Scripture and that His Word is sufficient to address the spiritual issues at the heart of our struggles in life. Scripture clearly speaks about grief, fear, depression, persecution, betrayal, loss, temptation, and broken relationships. Yet on every page, God continually points His people to Himself. He is “our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). Biblical counseling seeks to connect people to that unchanging hope.

Biblical counseling is more than advice or Christian encouragement. It is not simply giving Bible verses to people with problems. It is a relationship between believers where God’s Word is applied with compassion to help others know Christ, grow in holiness, and faithfully respond to the challenges of life. It recognizes that every person has been created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27), that our greatest hope for sin and suffering is found in the person and work of Jesus, who transforms hearts through the power of the gospel (2 Corinthians 5:17). Because biblical counseling is rooted in the gospel, our greatest desire is not simply that your circumstances change, but that your relationship with Christ deepens. True hope is found in the Savior who invites the weary to come to Him (Matthew 11:28).

No problem is too small, and no burden is too heavy to bring before our Lord. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, grief, conflict, addiction, fear, or marital difficulties, you do not have to face those burdens alone. Biblical counseling provides caring counselors who listen carefully, pray faithfully, and open the Scriptures dutifully. Lasting hope is found in the living and active Word of God (Hebrews 4:12). Biblical counseling is an extension of the church’s mission to make disciples who know, love, and follow Jesus Christ.
